The Best Tallow Based Lip Balm for Dry Lips
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon rendered tallow
- 1 tablespoon shea butter
- 1 tablespoon beeswax
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- Optional: 5–10 drops of essential oil (like peppermint, lavender, or orange) for fragrance and added benefits
Instructions:
- Prepare a Double Boiler: To melt the ingredients, you'll want to use a double boiler. Fill a saucepan with a couple of inches of water and place a heatproof glass bowl or smaller pot on top, making sure the bowl doesn't touch the water. This will help gently melt the ingredients without direct heat.
- Melt the Ingredients: Add the tallow, shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil to the bowl in the double boiler. Heat gently over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until everything is completely melted and well-combined.
- Add Essential Oils (Optional): Once the mixture is fully melted, remove it from the heat. If you'd like to add fragrance or therapeutic properties, drop in your essential oils and stir well to incorporate.
- Pour Into Containers: Carefully pour the melted lip balm mixture into small containers, such as empty lip balm tubes or small tins. Be sure to leave a bit of space at the top to prevent spillage while the balm hardens.
- Let It Set: Allow the lip balm to cool at room temperature for several hours until it solidifies. You can also speed up the process by placing it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes.
- Store: Once the balm is set and solidified, cap the containers and store your lip balm in a cool, dry place.
Tips:
- Adjust the consistency: If you want a firmer balm, you can add a little extra beeswax. For a softer, smoother balm, increase the amount of coconut oil or shea butter.
- Customize the scent: Essential oils like peppermint provide a cooling, refreshing effect, while lavender offers a calming aroma.
- Use clean containers: Ensure your containers are clean and dry to avoid contamination.
This tallow-based lip balm is deeply moisturizing and provides a nourishing, natural alternative to commercial lip balms. Enjoy!
